I am an invited assistant professor at the
Computer Science Department of Faculty of Sciences,
University of Porto and also a researcher at LIAAD:
Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence and Decision
Support, a unit of INESC TEC .
I have a PhD in Computer Science from the Faculty of Sciences - University of Porto. My PhD thesis was on Utility-based Regression. In this thesis, I have studied the general problem of regression based on utility. More conventional regression techniques assume that the relevance of values throughout the objective variable is uniform and that the magnitude of the predictions error is the only factor related to cost. One of the contributions of the thesis was a new evaluation methodology that assesses the utility (cost/benefit) of a prediction for a given value of the target variable, based on the prediction error and on the relevance of both predicted and true values.
Main Research Interests:
- Data Mining, KDD and Machine Learning;
- Utility-based Learning;
- Outlier Detection;
- Evaluation Issues on Learning Tasks;
- Applications to Environmental, Health Care Problems, Fraud Detection etc.
- Artificial Intelligence.
In LIAAD's MODYS Research Interest Group , I have been involved in the following Research Projects:
