The Department of Computer Science (DCC) of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP) has the mission of ensuring a program of excellence in teaching, research and services to the community in the area of Computer Science.
Computer Science is divided into many subareas of computing theory and practice, such as fundamentals of computing, algorithms and data structures, programming languages, operating systems, parallel and distributed computing systems, computer networks, computer security, intelligence artificial intelligence, data science, bioinformatics and computer graphics.
DCC offers specialized training in the area of Computer Science / IT at undergraduate, master's and doctoral levels, enabling its graduates to autonomously and independently monitor progress in the area, focusing on fundamental areas, but never losing sight of practical achievement of acquired knowledge and skills.
The DCC aims to create, share and apply knowledge in the area of Computer Science, not only through teaching and training but also through research (R&D) and technology transfer. The DCC maintains strong links with society and companies, through the University of Porto or associated Research Centers.
As a department, it has promoted and participated in national and international programming competitions for high school students (Informatics Olympiads and ToPAS), and for university students, MIUP and SWERC. In these tests, DCC has stood out for the achievements of students and teachers.
