This selection recognises the scientific and technological expertise of Hélder Oliveira, FCUP professor and INESC TEC researcher, in the field of lung cancer.
Hélder Oliveira, professor at the Department of Computer Science (DCC) of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP), has been selected to join the Expert Pool of the European Commission Initiative on Lung Cancer (EC-LuC), a European Commission pool bringing together international experts to help develop guidelines on lung cancer prevention, screening, diagnosis, and quality assurance of care.
The selection recognises the scientific and technological expertise of the FCUP professor, whose research has focused on using artificial intelligence to improve the diagnosis of lung cancer.
As a member of the Expert Pool, Hélder Oliveira, who is also a researcher at the Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC), may be called upon to join a Specific Thematic Group or even invited to become a formal member of the EC-LuC Working Group, the decision-making body of the initiative, managed by the Joint Research Centre.
As part of the Expert Pool, his role may include contributing to the development of proposed recommendations and/or requirements for approval by the EC-LuC Working Group.
About Hélder Oliveira
Hélder Oliveira is a professor at the Department of Computer Science at FCUP and a senior researcher at INESC TEC, where he leads the Visual Computing and Machine Intelligence area. He holds a Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP). His research focuses on artificial intelligence, computer vision, and image processing, with particular applications in healthcare and medical imaging.
He currently coordinates two major research projects: AI4Lungs, which focuses on using AI to improve lung cancer diagnosis and has received €6.9 million in funding, and PHASE IV AI (Privacy Compliant Health Data As A Service For AI Development), which has applications in high-impact diseases, particularly certain types of cancer.
He is the author of numerous international scientific publications and currently serves as Director and Chair of the Scientific Committee of the MSc in Health Informatics at FCUP.
