Title: Can Machines Think?

Abstract: The impact that AI is having on our lives is such that we never cease to be surprised and to ask questions about it. This is both natural and desirable.

After all, although machines are providing us with increasingly better answers, the questions—especially the most fundamental ones—remain ours. For this reason, this talk begins with a question: Can machines think? It then continues with many others: What is Artificial Intelligence and how did it emerge? Is AI truly intelligent? Will machines achieve superintelligence?

Rector of the University of Santiago de Compostela from 2002 to 2010.

Recipient of the Spanish National Prize “José García Santesmases” in Computer Science in 2020. Founder-promoter of two spin-offs: Situm Technologies and InVerbis Analytics. Among the most important projects he currently leads are the Nós project, focused on developing language technologies for Galician, and the USC-Plexus Chair in AI applied to Personalized Precision Medicine.

On the morning of the same day, at 11:30 AM in FC5 003, Senén will present the NLP/LLM project for the Galician language.

The talk "CiTIUS: Intelligent and Language Technologies" introduces CiTIUS (Singular Research Centre in Intelligent Technologies) at the University of Santiago de Compostela, including its management, organization, research areas, and main ongoing projects, with a particular focus on the Nós project for Galician language technologies.
