DCC-FCUP participated in one of the world’s leading biomedical engineering events.
Hélder Oliveira, a professor at the Department of Computer Science (DCC) of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP), is one of the authors of an award-winning study presented in Canada on the use of artificial intelligence to predict breast cancer biomarkers from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The distinction was awarded at the 48th Annual International Conference of EMBC 2026 (IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society), one of the world’s most prestigious events in the field of biomedical engineering.
The paper “From biological priors to architectural constraints: Deep multitask learning for MRI-based breast cancer biomarker prediction”, presented by Pedro Vítor Lima, a student at the Faculty of Engineering (FEUP), was one of the recipients of the Best Paper Award.
Miguel Coimbra, a DCC-FCUP professor, was also part of the broader team of FCUP and FEUP professors and students, as well as INESC TEC researchers, who participated in the conference. At the event, he presented his latest research on artificial intelligence applied to gastroenterology.
FCUP students Inês Lopes and Nina Lichtenberger, from the PhD programme in Computer Science (MAP joint programme) and the MSc in Data Science, respectively, also presented the results of their research in this field through oral and poster presentations.
The event, held from July 28 to 30 in Toronto, Canada, also recognized the IEEE Portugal Section with the Outstanding European Chapter Award.
Another IEEE initiative is already scheduled for October this year: the 22nd IEEE EMBS International Conference on Body Sensor Networks (BSN 2026), which will take place in Porto. DCC-FCUP professors Miguel Coimbra and Francesco Renna are members of the Organizing Committee.
