Master in Health Informatics
The Master's in Health Informatics, organized in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP), aims to study the theoretical aspects of information sciences specific to the understanding of biomedical data, information, and knowledge, as well as the practical application of information technologies in healthcare systems. Its ultimate goal is to improve the safety, effectiveness, efficiency, equity, and accessibility of healthcare delivery.
This Master's program covers a wide range of scientific and technical topics, including: electronic health records in primary and tertiary care; coding and classification systems for diagnoses and procedures; ICT standards in healthcare; signal and image processing; electronic communication between healthcare providers; decision support systems; and the implementation and evaluation of healthcare technologies and information systems.
The program was specifically designed both for computer engineers or computer scientists, and for physicians, nurses, radiology technicians, and other professionals in the fields of healthcare or information technology who wish to deepen their knowledge and skills in medical informatics and apply them in their organizations (hospitals, clinics, software companies, etc.).
Career Opportunities
Graduates of the Master's in Medical Informatics may pursue careers as managers or consultants of healthcare information systems, project managers of healthcare information systems, or researchers in the field of health informatics, particularly in areas such as decision support systems, e-Health, medical signal and image processing, and information security, among others. The job market for these professionals includes, among others, software companies developing applications for healthcare, hospitals, clinics, health centers and other healthcare units, regional and sub-regional health administrations, higher education institutions, research and development centers, medical equipment and instrumentation companies, as well as other enterprises connected to the healthcare sector.
