Pedro Nogueira is a consultant and account manager at Mobilwave. He shares his experience of the Master's Degree in Medical Informatics.

"With more than 20 years of experience in the healthcare sector, I felt the need to go beyond clinical practice and gain a structured understanding of how to solve real and complex problems in health systems. I have always believed that the transformation of healthcare requires appropriate technology, intelligent digitalisation, and new processes capable of generating information and, above all, knowledge, grounded in solid scientific foundations. It was this conviction that led me to pursue the Master’s in Medical Informatics.

The master’s programme clearly exceeded my expectations. The strong connection between theory and practice, the close interaction with experienced faculty, and the way the contents extend beyond the classroom context allowed me to develop a much broader and more critical perspective on digital health. More than learning tools, I learned how to think about systems, processes, and impact. This training played a decisive role in my professional path, enabling me to shift my focus from individual care to the continuous improvement of health systems.

Throughout the programme, the different areas covered proved essential for understanding the current and future challenges of the sector. For example, secondary use of data, clinical decision support systems, and telemedicine provided concrete insight into new models of care delivery. In parallel, content related to processes, interoperability, and usability reinforced the importance of designing technological solutions aligned with the real needs of users—healthcare professionals and citizens—an essential condition for adoption and for achieving effective impact in practice.

I currently work as a consultant and account manager at a healthcare software solutions company (Mobilwave), collaborating with various medical specialties at a national level. I believe this master’s programme has a clearly up-to-date and distinctive approach, successfully bridging academia with real-world practice, entrepreneurship, and the challenges of health system sustainability. The programme promotes a hybrid education, capable of dialoguing across different fields and integrating clinical, technological, and organisational knowledge. In this context, the student’s attitude is decisive in maximising the value of the programme, fully benefiting from the diversity of faculty, professionals, and partners with whom we have the opportunity to interact throughout the master’s.

Informatization alone is not the solution to all healthcare problems; however, when integrated into a clear and well-structured continuous improvement strategy, it can become a powerful exponential factor for transformation. The true value of the Master’s in Medical Informatics lies in its ability to teach how to analyse healthcare processes scientifically, recognising them as complex systems. These processes must be assessed and transformed by multidisciplinary teams, grounded in the best available evidence, with a focus on creating clinical and organisational value—and, ultimately, value for all of us."
