Integrated Sensing and Communications - Private Attribute Inference and Privacy Preservation 


Resumo

Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC) introduces low-cost sensing capabilities to ubiquitous wireless infrastructure, such as WiFi networks. These networks can infer localization, activity, and identity without requiring user-held devices or the line-of-sight conditions necessary for vision-based systems. While this enables innovative applications like Human-Machine Interface (HMI) systems, it also introduces severe privacy risks, as adversaries can exploit these signals for covert surveillance, acquiring sensitive information from unaware and unconsenting targets.

In this talk, I will present our work on person identification using physical layer channel characteristics in WiFi networks, demonstrating how prior knowledge and multiple observations can significantly improve performance. I will then discuss how we address cross-environment limitations in these sensing scenarios using a Few-Shot Learning approach. The talk concludes with a discussion on evaluating the privacy risks inherent to ISAC and practical preservation measures to protect users.


Bio

Óscar Martins is a PhD student in Computer Science at the University of Porto (U. Porto) and holds an MSc in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Coimbra (U. Coimbra). He is currently a researcher affiliated with INESC TEC and IT Coimbra.

His research focuses on 6G communications, Joint Communication and Sensing (JCAS) networks, WiFi-based sensing, and privacy-preserving mechanisms, bridging the gap between signal processing and security. His ongoing PhD thesis addresses the capabilities and limitations of ubiquitous communication-based sensing, as well as its privacy implications and potential mitigations for future JCAS networks.

Martins has published and presented his work in journals and conferences such as the IEEE Open Journal of the Communications Society (2025) and IEEE Communications Letters (2023), IEEE WoWMoM (Boston) and IEEE MEDITCOM (Madrid). As a dedicated researcher, he has actively contributed to Horizon Europe (PRIVATEER) and FCT/ANI (SNOB-5G) projects.
